Unusual Highly Carved Whimsy Vessel

There's a lot going in this carving from New York State. It appears to be a vessel with a three-finger hold, but what was it made to contain? The man is playing an instrument and the woman is feeding a cow. Two large links hold the stopper. 9 inches long with the stopper in place. 13 inches long with the stopper out. $850
